Carol Stream Village History

Like Angelo Caputo’s, the village of Carol Stream has a unique history. The DuPage County community was incorporated in 1959, though farming had occurred in the area as far back as 1840. Jay W. Stream, the head of a construction company, had difficulty planning a residential subdivision and bought unincorporated farmland. In 1957, Stream’s daughter, Carol, was involved in a car accident, causing her to fall into a coma. After four months of recovery, she regained consciousness and learned that her father had named his acquired community after her namesake.Today, the village of Carol Stream continues to draw inspiration from the story in a variety of pursuits. The vibrant community is home to around 39,000 people and many companies, retailers, industrial users, and other types of businesses that support the village’s economy.Additionally, Carol Stream offers residents and visitors many recreational opportunities to be enjoyed through the Carol Stream Park District, as well as 23 miles of paths and trails to explore, a centralized town center, and 26,000 acres of wildlife and forest preservation as a part of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.
